The Best Kept Secret of the Great Wall: Great Wall of China Slide!
Did you know you can slide down the Great Wall of China?!
That’s right, you can take a toboggan slide, or alpine slide for some of you, down the side of the Great Wall. And let me tell you- it is fun. Who doesn’t want to slide down the Great Wall of China?!
Sure you can walk up, along, and down it- but trust me, after some hours walking the steps of the Great Wall, you will look forward to the ride down.
This was one of the best experiences I had in China. I was with my cohort from my MBA program and we all turned into a bunch of kids. I’m talking giggling, yelling, smiling ear to ear. It was a blast! And you can experience it too!
(PS, there is a bonus video at the end of this post of what it’s really like to ride the slide!).
What is the Great Wall of China Slide?
Think of a small metal bobsled track. One that winds its way down the side of the mountain, following the flow of the Great Wall. Here, let me just show you.
You sit in your own little car with a pull brake and away you go. They make sure you start off with enough room between you and the person in front of you, but it’s up to you to maintain that distance the remainder of your ride.
Why Ride the Slide at the Great Wall of China?
Why not? You will have been walking around all day, you’ve seen what a large section of the Wall looks like, it will just look the same walking down, but the slide ride will give you a whole new view!
And, if you are scared, you can control the speed of your own car, so there is no reason to worry, you can stop it at any time.
Riding the slide down also gives you the perfect amount of walking time around the Great Wall as you can walk from the cable cars (or other entrances) to the slide entrance. This allows you to see a lot of the sections, but also work your way towards an exit without overdoing it.
Plus, going to the section of the Wall that has the slide is a less trafficked, less touristy part, giving you a more unique experience!
Where is the Great Wall of China Slide Located?
To access the slide, you have to go to the section of the Great Wall called Mutianyua. This is about 2 hours north of Beijing and is not the same as the more popular Badaling area that is closer to the city. Once in this main area, you will be able to take a cable car up to the actual wall, or walk if you are really brave. Regardless of how you get to the top, to take the slide you just need to get to the entrance at section 6 as shown on the map below.
How Long Is the Great Wall of China Slide?
The entire length of the slide at the Great Wall is 1580 meters and takes about 5 minutes to ride down (depending on your braking speed). Average speed is 12 mph.
